The 1873 Tillinghast Cottage

The Tillinghast family – prominent Rhode Island & New York shipowners/merchants – commissioned famed Victorian architect Samuel Freeman Pratt to design our summer home which was built by the Oak Bluffs Land & Wharf company in 1873.

The Beachfront Inn represents Pratt’s unique vision and innovative “Bird Cage” style that graces many mansions in Newport, Rhode Island, and smaller, but still grand, buildings in Oak Bluffs. Nearby iconic Pratt designs include the octagon-shaped Union Chapel and the expansive open-air Tabernacle in the Campgrounds neighborhood - both popular for events of all kinds.

The Arend family purchased the home in 1959 and opened its doors to guests in 1982. A new generation assumed ownership in 2018 and is modernizing the property while retaining and restoring important original elements.

We look forward to sharing the Beachfront Inn of Martha’s Vineyard with you.
